At first glance, the TBR—from Arnold & Son's super-prestigious Instrument collection—looks quite straightforward. The first is the “true beat” seconds (more commonly known as “dead beat”), which makes the second hand tick, as opposed to moving constantly, and allows for more accurate readings. The second is the retrograde date display. The hand jumps instantly each midnight, but when it reaches the end of the month, it cleverly jumps right back to day one without completing a full circle. Both of these present very complex engineering problems, but combining them is a truly extraordinary challenge, on top of which Arnold & Son resolved not to add any extra pushers for setting the date. The movement is also automatic, virtually unheard of for a dead beat. The whole thing comes down to tolerances of less than a micron, and required LIGA fabrication technology to build.
